Lille Introduction

Hi rugby fans. I’ve lived – mostly – in Lille for a few years now. It’s a great city. Very close to Belgium, this is the heart of Flanders. Lille is the fifth-largest city in France, filled with a little over one million residents.

Famous for its food and drink, the city has transformed itself over the last four decades, from a tired, grubby industrial town, into a modern European metropolis. Welcoming and friendly, you are sure of a fantastic time at the Rugby World Cup. Click on the various tabs for more detailed information. Hope it’s useful. I put it onto this (very!) basic website because I was having problems with Facebook, when I posted similar information into the Scotland fans’ pages. Facebook decided I was a spammer and binned all my posts! If that’s AI, we’re in deep trouble! Andy

The map

Obviously, everyone has online maps! However, I thought this map was quite good for getting your bearings. The streets in yellow are the old town (Vieux Lille). The streets in pink are pedestrianised shopping streets. Think of Gare Lille-Flandres as your transport hub (the two metro lines intersect here and the tramlines terminate/start here) and the two adjoining central squares (Grand Place/Place Charles de Gaulle and Place du Théâtre), where the fan zones are located, as the centre of the city. The stadium is about 7km to the south-east, in Villeneuve d’Ascq.
